  1. Hey Lorna- it actually sounds like you are doing fine! Peeing AND pooping by day 4- whahooo!

I know when you are exhausted and stressed, and your girl is not herself it is hard to see any light at the end- but it is there.

Don’t get discouraged- all of our pups heal and deal at their own pace. Some sail right through recovery, some take longer. Average around here is two tough weeks of ups and downs. She is dealing with a lot- but don’t worry- her personality will come back.

All our vet told us was that most dogs do fine on three legs. So when my pug Maggie was still mopey in week 3 and 4 I thought I had done the wrong thing. It’s just that she needed that much time to deal with her new situation (she was an obstinate pug).
She was out of pain and off all meds by the end of 2 weeks- just unhappy.

  2. yes, they don’t call the first two weeks ‘hell weeks’ for nothing. we noticed significant improvement by week two, might be because we were cutting the amount of tramadol down some by then. peeing and pooping are great by day four – and an appetite too!!! don’t worry, the scary days will pass. we recommend plenty of medicinal naps for both of you!

  3. Do you have her on gabapentin? That is what cured Sammy of it, it was horribly hard on him until about the end of the 2nd day on gabapentin…
Good luck with her and try and get sleep while you can,

  4. The vet said “it will pass”. I have to be honest i hate calling the vet. We talk to a different vet each time we call and they all sound like they dont care. We hope hope hope this pain passes….if it doesn’t pass by Thursday (1 week post op) i am gonna call the vet for some gabapentin
